Tax Exempt Purchasing

Tax-exempt treatment applies to qualifying organizations and is applied at the account level before ordering, not refunded after purchase. This page lists what is required.

Who can qualify

Organizations that issue a valid exemption certificate for the delivery jurisdiction - for example, a resale certificate for businesses buying for resale, or a charitable, educational, or government exemption certificate for qualifying bodies. Rules differ by state; eligibility is determined by the jurisdiction that issued the certificate.

Documentation required

A legible copy of the exemption certificate showing the organization name and exemption number; the organization's trading name and delivery address as they will appear on orders; and the name of the person responsible for the account. Certificates are validated before tax-exempt status is applied to the account.

How exemption is applied

Once an account is approved as tax-exempt, exempt status applies automatically to orders placed under it. Exemption cannot be applied retroactively to an order that was placed and taxed before the account was approved, so set the account up before the first order where timing allows.

Current build

Guest checkout calculates sales tax where required. To register a tax-exemption certificate for business-account purchases, email the documentation to support@businesssupplydirect.example and it will be validated when account setup opens.
